Measuring windows
Measuring for your exterior shutters is not difficult – but accuracy is important. While we are shutter purists and would like to craft your shutters to the absolute, exact measurements of your windows, we also live in the 21st Century and understand that today’s shutters most often serve a decorative purpose, rather than one of function. So, while we encourage being as accurate as possible, rest assured that your shutters will still look outstanding if the measurements are a little “off”.

Measuring for rectangular windows
You can gather your measurements from inside your house by opening the window. Measure the height and width of your window opening where the shutters would rest in the closed position, and record your measurements. Since windows are not always 100% square, especially in older homes, take two measurements of the window’s height, and two measurements of the window’s width. Use the smallest measurement if there are differences. (Note: The window’s width measurement will become the pair width of your shutter order. For example, if your window width measurement is 36", then the pair width to order would also be 36", which would result in two single shutters – both being 18" each.) See the illustration below for a visual reference.

Measuring for windows with an arch top
Gather the window’s width measurement as described above. Then, for the height measurements, use the following steps.

Measure the height from the bottom of the window to the highest point of the arch top, usually the center of the window, and record that distance. This is known as the “high point” of an arch top window, and is the longest measurement. Next, measure the height from the bottom of the window to the low point of the arch, and record that distance. This is known as “low point” of the arch top window, and is the shorter of the two measurements. See the illustration below for a visual reference.
